Data from: Sporadic feeding regulates robust food entrainable circadian clocks in blind cavefish (Version: 4)

The circadian clock represents a key timing system that enables organisms to anticipate the day-night cycle. To ensure synchronization with the environment it is entrained by various periodic signals of which light is the best studied. Many investigations have pointed to the existence of two distinct circadian oscillators: one regulated by the light-dark cycle (light-entrainable oscillator) and the other set specifically by feeding time (food-entrainable oscillator) independently of light, and which regulates various aspects of feeding behaviour. Blind cavefish have evolved under extreme conditions where they completely lack light exposure and also experience food deprivation. Furthermore, they are under particular pressure to optimize the timing of their feeding behaviour. Here, we have investigated feeding regulated clocks in two well-studied cavefish species, the Somalian cavefish Phreatichthys andruzzii and the Mexican cavefish Astyanax mexicanus, in comparison with the surface-dwelling zebrafish Danio rerio. Our results reveal that feeding represents an extremely strong synchronizer for circadian locomotor rhythmicity in subterranean cavefish. Indeed, we showed that consuming just one meal every 4 days is sufficient to entrain circadian rhythmicity in both cavefish species, but not in zebrafish. These profound adaptations to an extreme environment provide unique insight into the connections between feeding and circadian clocks.

16S rRNA gene sequencing of non-lactic acid bacteria cultures from lait caillé in Burkina Faso

The objective of this investigation was to provide information on the identity of non-lactic acid bacteria originating from traditional lait caillé and capable of growing abundantly on the standard media used for dairy LAB isolation. Specifically, Gram positive catalase positive and Gram negative bacteria growing on MRS and M17 agar were considered for molecular identificationMRS and M17 agar plates previously inoculated with traditional lait caillé were used to screen for Gram positive catalase positive and Gram negative bacteria. Successive streaking were performed to purify colonies. Culture purity, cells morphology were analysed by microscopy. Gram and catalase tests were done to select Gram negative and Gram positive catalase positive bacteria. (GTG)5-based rep-PCR fingerprint followed by cluster analysis, sequencing of 16S rRNA gene and database search in GenBank were performed to identify the isolates. Data showed a predominance of Klebsiella pneumoniae/K. quasipneumoniae/K. variicola among Gram negative bacteria and a variety of species among Gram positive catalase positive bacteria such as Kocuria spp., Bacillus cereus group species, Macrococcus caseoliticus, Clostridium bifermentans, Staphylococcus hominis. These data are useful as they gave some information on the presence of bacteria associated with emerging public health risks such as Klebsiella pneumonia species complex, Bacillus cereus group species, Kocuria spp. occurring in a traditional spontaneously fermented milk product. They also gave further insights for a broader investigation on non-lactic acid bacteria occurring in traditional fermentation of unpasteurised milks and for evaluation and development of selective media for Lactic acid bacteria growth.

Herbaceous vegetation responses to experimental fire in savannas and forests depend on biome and climate (Version: 2)

Fire-vegetation feedbacks potentially maintain global savanna and forest distributions. Accordingly, vegetation in savanna and forest ecosystems should have differential responses to fire, but fire response data for herbaceous vegetation has yet to be synthesized across biomes. Here, we examined herbaceous vegetation responses to experimental fire at 30 sites spanning four continents. Across a variety of metrics, herbaceous vegetation increased in abundance where fire was applied, with larger responses to fire in wetter and in cooler and/or less seasonal systems. Compared to forests, savannas were associated with a 4.8 (±0.4) times larger difference in burned versus unburned herbaceous vegetation abundance. In particular, grass cover decreased with fire exclusion in savannas, largely via decreases in C4 grass cover, whereas changes in fire frequency had a relatively weak effect on grass cover in forests. These differential responses underscore the importance of fire for maintaining the vegetation structure of savannas and forests.

Data from: Intermediate acoustic-to-semantic representations link behavioural and neural responses to natural sounds (Version: 5)

Recognizing sounds implicates the cerebral transformation of input waveforms into semantic representations. Although past research identified the superior temporal gyrus (STG) as a crucial cortical region, the computational fingerprint of these cerebral transformations remains poorly characterized. Here, we exploit a model-comparison framework and contrasted the ability of acoustic, semantic (continuous and categorical), and sound-to-event deep neural network (DNN) representation models to predict perceived sound dissimilarity and 7 Tesla human auditory cortex fMRI responses. We confirm that spectrotemporal modulations predict early auditory cortex (Heschl’s gyrus) responses, and that auditory dimensions (e.g., loudness, periodicity) predict STG responses and perceived dissimilarity. Sound-to-event DNNs predict HG responses similar to acoustic models but, notably, they outperform all competing models at predicting both STG responses and perceived dissimilarity. Our findings indicate that STG entails intermediate acoustic-to-semantic sound representations that neither acoustic nor semantic models can account for. These representations are compositional in nature and relevant to behaviour.
