This database includes the data used in paper “Studying habitat requirements in extremely small, peripheral populations: an assessment of the barred warbler Curruca nisoria in the Italian Alps”, Ecological Solutions and Evidence. Breeding barred warblers were surveyed in South Tyrol (northern Italy) between years 2019 and 2024. We then compared the environmental and topographic characteristics of 21 presence and 21 control plots (1 ha-squares) to investigate the habitat preferences of the species in an Alpine context. Land use/land cover variables were obtained by mapping them in QGIS using detailed recent aerial photographs made publicly available by the Autonomous Province of Bozen/Bolzano, while terrain slope and solar radiation were derived in QGIS from a 10 m-resolution digital elevation model (Tarquini et al. 2023).

This database includes the data used in paper “Wing morphology changes with habitat availability and elevation in an alpine -specialist bird”, Global Ecology and Conservation (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2024.e03276). Measured birds were captured during the breeding period with mist-nets and spring traps at seven study areas in the central-eastern Italian Alps during spring/summer 2021 and 2022. Primary feathers lengths (P9-P1) were measured by a metal ruler (± 0.5 mm). Age and sex were determined according to Demongin (2016) and Strinella et al. (2013). The extension of suitable habitat within a 10-km radius around each sampling area was derived from Ceresa et al. (2024). Within the same radius, winter mean temperature and precipitation were calculated using data from the CHELSA database (BIO11 and BIO19, Karger et al. 2017).

This dataset includes all the data used for fitting in R the maximum likelihood population effects models reported in the paper "Restricted dispersal and inbreeding in a high-elevation bird across the ‘sky islands’ of the European Alps": the matrix of individuals genetic distances (gendistances_all.csv), raster files connected to different hypotheses of landscape effect on dispersal (resistance_MN.asc, isolation_MN.asc, constant_asc.asc, null_asc.asc), coordinates for each sample (MN_coord_all.txt), and R script for MLPE models (MLPE_script.txt). The same files are provided also to fit the same models on a reduced dataset where first-degree relationships involving juveniles were removed (gendistances_unrelated_ad.csv, MN_coord_unrelated_ad.txt, MLPE_script_filtered_dataset.txt). Data are provided also for the species distribution models reported in the study, i.e., the snowfinch occurrence data used in the models (snowfinch_data_cleaned.csv) as well as training and testing datasets (SWD_white_winged_snowfinch_training.RDS and SWD_white_winged_snowfinch_testing.RDS).

At each capture site, percentage cover of vegetation categories within a 100-m radius was visually estimated in the field to the nearest 5%, and variables estimated to cover less than 5% of the plot were assigned a 1% cover value.
