Dataset on physical-chemical and marine water quality variables in San Andrés, Colombia

In San Andrés island, Colombia, in situ measurements of marine water quality and physical-chemical parameters around the island’s northeastern and northwestern zones were measured. For marine water quality, we aimed to observe the distribution of salinity, temperature, and heavy metals both at the surface and on the seabed, in addition to other water quality parameters in specific locations and times. For salinity and temperature, a salinity tester model HQ40d was used. We collected samples of seawater and brine which were analyzed in a laboratory for multiple other parameters, including heavy metals such as Cr and Cu, and the alkaline metal ion Mg. Last, CTD measurements showed variation along the water column in salinity and temperature, especially close to the brine discharge where should be expected greater salinity levels. This dataset has the potential to be useful for researchers, policymakers, and locals to raise awareness through data, modeling, and solutions for the water quality conditions under a brine discharge and a wastewater discharge.
