Using transects the diameter of 10 pairs of randomly selected adult trees of the same species (maple trees) was measured in meters. The canopy coverage (percentage out of 100%) was estimated using a square made with your fingers and checking to see how much sky is visible through the foliage of each tree and the distance to the nearest sapling of the same species in meters was measured. The experiment was performed on September 23 2014 at 3:50 pm, at Saywell Woods located on the York University campus. The temperature was 21ᵒC and it was mainly sunny.

Using a transect a distance of 25 meters in a straight line in a flat area (grasslands behind Ross building of York University and Saywell Woods at York Universty). A sweep net was then used to collect any insects located along the transect, this was done using a sweeping motion to ensure that insects were collected within the net and counted before escaping the net. The number of insects in the net and the different species of insect (ant, spiders, etc.) were recorded. This was then repeated 10 times in each area (grasslands, woods). The purpose of this experiment was to determine any differences in insect species in the grasslands and woodlots at York University as well as the number of each species. The experiment was performed on September 30 2014 between 2:45 pm and 4:30 pm. The temperature was 14 degrees celcius with an overcast sky.
