Multi-instrument telemetry package data associated with ten sea turtles from the Brunswick Channel, 2024

This data release contains information from several instruments attached to individuals captured in the Brunswick Channel. Each instrument package included an acceleration data logger (ADL) with an in-line satellite tag designed to 'pop-off' after a set period using corroding links. The package also included a permanent satellite tag provided GPS locations when services were available. These packages were attached to nine Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) turtles and one Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtle captured during trawling operations. One Kemp's ridley was outfitted with a satellite tag that did not have GPS capability. Of the ten pop-off tags, eight were fully recovered. One stopped reporting near Hilton Head, South Carolina but was not found during search operations, and another was lost to currents that carried it into the Atlantic, beyond reasonable recovery range.

Nesting and non-nesting emergences for four species of imperiled sea turtles derived from acceleration data loggers, 2012-2017

These data contain acceleration, pitch, yaw, roll, and ancillary data collected by acceleration data loggers (ADL) attached to four sea turtle species: green (Chelonia mydas) sea turtles, hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles, Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) sea turtles, and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles. A total of 54 nesting events and 76 non-nesting emergence events were identified in the data and validated by satellite tag location data for three of the four species (i.e., Kemp's ridley spatial data not included) and researcher observations.

Fine-scale behavior of sea turtles in the Gulf derived from acceleration data loggers, 2018 - 2023

This release contains data from acceleration data logger (ADL) float packages designed to 'pop-off' in a set amount of time for recovery and platform terminal transmitter (PTT) satellite tags attached to 12 Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) and 7 Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtles in several geographic locations, using the methods of Hart et al., 2013. These instrument packages collected acceleration, depth, environmental temperature, and spatial data. Pilot testing of the pop-off instrument packages was conducted in the Dry Tortugas (one Loggerhead) and Pascagoula, MS (one Kemp's ridley), in September 2018 and September 2019, respectively; data from these pilot tests are included in this data release. Ten packages (all Kemp's ridley) were applied to individuals caught during trawling operations in Ship Shoal, LA in July 2022. One Ship Shoal tag was not recovered. An additional 7 were applied to individuals caught in Sabine Banks, TX in July 2023 (6 Loggerhead, 1 Kemp's ridley): all tags recovered. Instrument data have been subset to the period that the ADL packages were directly attached to the individual, and satellite location data are provided in their entirety.
