Replication data for: Circulation and upwelling induced by coastal trapped waves over a submarine canyon in an idealized eastern boundary margin

------------------- GENERAL INFORMATION ------------------- Title of Dataset: Replication data for: Circulation and upwelling induced by coastal trapped waves over a submarine canyon in an idealized eastern boundary margin Gonzalo S. Saldías, Universidad del Bio-Bío, Concepcion, Chile, [email protected]
Karina Ramos-Musalem, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico, [email protected]
Susan Allen, University of British Columbia, [email protected] Date of model runs: Model was run for 50 model days - arbitrary dates Runs were done in 2019-11 to 2020-02 using the Regional Ocean Modeling System -------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW -------------------- There are 3 experiments, each with 2 runs: one run uses a bathymetry of a straight shelf incised by a submarine canyon (code CR= canyon run) and the other one uses a straight shelf with no canyon (code NCR= no canyon run). Each experiment has a different shelf slope: DS= deep shelf, IS=Intermediate shelf, SS=Shallow shelf. In this numerical experiments, a coastal trapped wave of period 7 days, imposed at the southern boundary, propagates along the shelf for 50 model days, passing over a submarine canyon. All experiments are initialized with the same horizontally uniform temperature and salinity profiles.
In summary:
CR_DS: Uses the bathymetry of a straight shelf incised by a submarine canyon and a deep shelf (smallest shelf slope).
NCR_DS: Uses the bathymetry of a straight shelf and a deep shelf (smallest shelf slope). CR_IS: Uses the bathymetry of a straight shelf incised by a submarine canyon and an intermediate shelf (intermediate shelf slope).
NCR_IS: Uses the bathymetry of a straight shelf and a deep shelf (intermediate shelf slope). CR_SS: Uses the bathymetry of a straight shelf incised by a submarine canyon and a shallow shelf (largest shelf slope).
NCR_SS: Uses the bathymetry of a straight shelf and a shallow shelf (largest shelf slope). Files uploaded here contain a subset of the domain; they only contain the area around the canyon (highest spatial resolution). The original domain was 400 km by 800 km, and here we share a region of 40 km from the coast (the shelf width) by 80 km alongshore (40 km to either side of the canyon axis). Results for Modeling dissolved and particulate 230-Th in the Canada Basin: Implications for recent changes in particle flux and intermediate circulation

The results of three runs of a 230-Th model coupled to the Arctic Ocean model ANHA4. These results are the basis of the publication Yu et al, Modeling dissolved and particulate 230-Th in the Canada Basin: Implications for recent changes in particle flux and intermediate circulation. Accepted by the Journal of Geophysical Research, Oceans in January 2020. The four runs are: * BaseRun.nc: base run with scavenging, variation in currents and variation in ice * Exp1.nc: base run but no extra bottom boundary scavenging * Exp2.nc : base run but with the circulation from 2002 used for every year * Exp3.nc : base run but with the ice field (used for particle flux) from 2002 used for every year

Replication data for: The impact of initial tracer profile on the exchange and on-shelf distribution of tracers induced by a submarine canyon

This dataset contains model output, in netCDF format, from an MITgcm configuration used to simulate an upwelling event in an idealized submarine canyon. The upwelling event lasts 9 days and output is saved every half day. Output for two experiments (AST and BAR) with four runs each is provided. These results are the basis of the publication The impact of initial tracer profile on the exchange and on-shelf distribution of tracers induced by a submarine canyon which is under revision. The preprint is available in the ESSOAr repository.

Atlantic 231Pa/230Th and biogenic opal compilation of the Holocene and the LGM

The strength and geometry of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is tightly coupled to climate on glacial-interglacial and millennial timescales, but has proved difficult to reconstruct, particularly for the Last Glacial Maximum. Today, the return flow from the northern North Atlantic to lower latitudes associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation reaches down to approximately 4,000 m. In contrast, during the Last Glacial Maximum this return flow is thought to have occurred primarily at shallower depths. Measurements of sedimentary 231Pa/230Th have been used to reconstruct the strength of circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean, but the effects of biogenic silica on 231Pa/230Th-based estimates remain controversial. Here we use measurements of 231Pa/230Th ratios and biogenic silica in Holocene-aged Atlantic sediments and simulations with a two-dimensional scavenging model to demonstrate that the geometry and strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are the primary controls of 231Pa/230Th ratios in modern Atlantic sediments. For the glacial maximum, a simulation of Atlantic overturning with a shallow, but vigorous circulation and bulk water transport at around 2,000 m depth best matched observed glacial Atlantic 231Pa/230Th values. We estimate that the transport of intermediate water during the Last Glacial Maximum was at least as strong as deep water transport today.
