This dataset consists of measures of topsoil (0-15 cm) physico-chemical properties from 575 soils sampled from 146 x 1 km squares across Great Britain collected in winter 2021 as part of the UKCEH Countryside Survey. The properties included are: pH, soil organic matter (loss on ignition, LOI), derived carbon concentration and carbon stock from LOI (SOC), soil group, soil bulk density of fine earth, soil moisture of wet soil, fine earth volumetric water content (dry), and nitrogen concentration and stock.The UKCEH Countryside Survey is a unique study or 'audit' of the natural resources of the UK's countryside. The sample sites are chosen from a stratified random sample, based on a 15 by 15 km grid of GB. Surveys have been carried out in 1978, 1984, 1990, 1998 and 2007 by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and predecessors, with repeated visits to most of the squares. The countryside is sampled and surveyed using rigorous scientific methods, allowing us to compare new results with those from previous surveys. In this way, we can detect the gradual and subtle changes that occur in the UK's countryside over time. This information product contains gridded estimates of Ellenberg vegetation indicator scores for four different indicators: fertility (N); pH/reactivity (R); light availability (L) and moisture (F) at 1km2 resolution. Both cover-weighted (cwt) and non-cover weighted (site) Ellenberg indicators are estimated. This dataset presents the mean topsoil (0-15 cm) organic carbon concentration (g kg-1) and measures of its variability at 1 km resolution across Great Britain. The mean and variability metrics were calculated from an ensemble of eight previously published digital soil maps applied to all 1 km grid cells across GB where data were available from all eight maps. Four of the maps were generated from the 2007 UKCEH Countryside Survey topsoil data, two of which are available online to use. Two maps are from the International Soil Reference and Information Centre, ISRIC: SoilGrids250m v.1 (2017) and v.2 (2020) which are free to download. Two maps are from the EU’s Joint Research Centre (JRC): the OCTOP map of 2004 and LUCAS map of 2014 which are both free to download.The dataset comes in the form of a seven-band raster tiff file, with each band representing the following:1. Mean predicted soil organic carbon concentration (g kg-1) of all eight maps at each 1 km grid cell2. Standard deviation (g kg-1) of all eight maps at each 1 km grid cell3. Coefficient of variation (unitless; the standard deviation divided by the mean) at each 1 km grid cell4. Signal to noise ratio (unitless; the mean divided by the standard deviation) at each 1 km grid cell5. Name of the map that deviates the most from the ensemble mean at each 1 km grid cell6. Relative size (%) of the largest difference from the ensemble mean at each 1 km grid cell7. This dataset presents modelled estimates of soil pH at 1km2 resolution across Great Britain. A Generalized Additive Model approach was used with Countryside Survey soil pH data from 2007 and including climate, atmospheric deposition, habitat, soil and spatial predictors. The model is based on soil pH data from 2446 locations across Great Britain and is representative of 0-15 cm soil depth. Soil pH was measured using 10g of field moist soil with 25ml de-ionised water giving a ratio of soil to water of 1:2.5 by weight. The Countryside Survey looks at a range of physical, chemical and biological properties of the topsoil from a representative sample of habitats across the UK.This work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council award number NE/R016429/1 as part of the UK-SCAPE programme delivering National Capability.

A Generalized Additive Model approach was used with Countryside Survey soil nitrogen data from 2007 and including climate, atmospheric deposition, habitat, soil and spatial predictors. The model is based on soil nitrogen data from 913 locations across Great Britain and is representative of 0-15 cm soil depth. Soil N concentration was determined using a total elemental analyser. This dataset presents modelled estimates of soil carbon concentration (g kg-1) at 1km2 resolution across Great Britain. A Generalized Additive Model approach was used with Countryside Survey soil carbon data from 2007 and including climate, atmospheric deposition, habitat, soil and spatial predictors. The model is based on soil carbon data from 2446 locations across Great Britain and is representative of 0-15 cm soil depth. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) was determined by combustion of 10g dry soil at 375 degrees Celsius for 16 hours; carbon concentration was estimated by multiplying LOI by a factor of 0.55. The properties included are: soil organic matter (loss on ignition (LOI)), derived carbon concentration, total soil organic carbon (SOC), nitrogen, Olsen-phosphorous, pH, electrical conductivity, soil bulk density of fine earth and fine earth volumetric water content.The UKCEH Countryside Survey is a unique study or 'audit' of the natural resources of the UK's countryside. This dataset consists of counts of pollinating insects from sites across Wales, with associated information on flower cover and survey conditions. Data were collected during (1) transect walks and (2) timed observations of pollinator-flower interactions. Data were collected between 2013 and 2016 from sites across Wales as part of the Glastir Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (GMEP). The monitoring programme was set up by the Welsh Government to monitor the effects of the Glastir agri-environment scheme on the environment. The field survey element was based on a stratified random sampling design of 300 x 1km square sites across Wales, and was managed by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.

This data set consists of headwater stream quality data for sites across Wales between 2013 and 2016. Data include macrophyte species records, chemistry and water quality metrics, 'River Habitat Surveys', invertebrates, diatoms and site characteristics. Streams were surveyed within a set of up to 300 x 1km squares across Wales (not all sites contained stream features), collected as part of the Glastir Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (GMEP).The monitoring programme was set up by the Welsh Government in 2013 to monitor the effects of the Glastir agri-environment scheme on the environment and ran from 2013 to 2016.
