Laboratory changes inherent to acute kidney injury induced by aminoglycosides in wistar rats

Abstract Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as an increase greater than 0.3 mg/L of serum creatinine within 48 hours and is a major cause of death in patients in intensive care units. Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Control (0.9% saline), Genta (gentamicin 50 mg.kg-1 BID) and Deh+Genta (gentamicin 50 mg.kg-1 BID + water restriction) and tested in an AKI model by aminoglycoside administration and dehydration implementation. The animals in the Deh+Genta group exhibited the lowest average weight and feed intake after the fifth day of the experiment. In this same period, water consumption by the Genta group was lower than the Control group, but in the following days of the experiment, polydipsia was noted for this group. The Deh+Genta group displayed the highest mean serum urea after the fifth day. The gentamicin-treated groups exhibited higher means than the Control group for serum creatinine, which proved to be a late renal marker for AKI. Serum GGT was higher in the Deh+Genta group, whereas urinary GGT was higher in the groups that received gentamicin, characterizing enzymuria, although severe dehydration can mask the results by indicating false negative values. The urinary GGT enzyme did not act as an early AKI biomarker. Decreased glomerular filtration rates enhanced the concentration of blood components and masked urinary and tissue components.

Scrotal hemangiosarcoma in a Large White boar

ABSTRACT: Tumors are rarely diagnosed in swine specie because of the short lifespan of production animals. Normally, these tumors do not present any clinical signs and are often detected at the time of slaughter. A 2-year-old Large White boar, used in the reproductive management of a farm and without a history of pre-existing problems, was examined for skin lesions on the scrotum. Samples were collected from skin segments containing lesions for histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis. Microscopically, the nodes in the scrotum pouch consisted of poorly demarcated, highly cellular, expansile, and multifocally invasive neoplasms, composed of immature endotheliocytes organized into neovascular formations. The tumor cells were pleomorphic, slightly oval to spindle-shaped, with eosinophilic cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei with one to three nucleoli. All the nodules analyzed were compatible with hemangiosarcoma. After immunohistochemical evaluation, for the quantification of tissue angiogenesis the neoplastic cells immunoexpressed the CD31 monoclonal antibodies and factor VIII, through the identification of proteins expressed on the surface of endothelial cells. The Ki67 cell proliferation marker was positive in approximately 10% of the neoplastic cells, demonstrating a high degree of malignancy. Hemangiosarcoma in swine species has already been identified in several organs and tissues; however, to date, no study has demonstrated the diagnosis of this condition on the skin of the scrotum, as reported in this study. Therefore, it is expected that this report will contribute to the knowledge of the frequency of neoplasms in swine species.

Brown booby (Sula leucosgaster) envenomation and death caused by toadfish (Porichthys porosissimus) ingestion in Southeastern Brazil

Abstract A case report of six brown booby (Sula leucogaster) envenomation following the ingestion of toadfish (Porichthys porosissimus) specimens in Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil is discussed herein. Several macro- and microscopic pathological alterations were observed in the examined brown booby specimens, and rapid envenomation (<24 h) is suggested due to the digestion stage of the fish found in their gastrointestinal tracts. This is the first report to mention the death of adult and juvenile brown boobies due to envenomation by the toadfish P. porosissimus. Further studies assessing the role of discarded fish as a driving force of negative effects on seabirds, such as envenomations, for example, along the southeastern coast of Brazil are recommended.
