Supplement 1. Data from invertebrate foods webs in Glen Canyon, Colorado River, USA.

File List Abundance and biomass.csv
Flows to consumers.csv Description Abundance and biomass.csv contains monthly abundance (no./m2 +1SD) and biomass (mg AFDM/m2 +1SD) of invertebrate taxa. These data were collected from Glen Canyon between 2006 and 2009, are presented on both a habitat-specific and habitat-weighed basis. Checksum values are: column 2 – Ceratapogonidae #/m2 – 2.94; column 6: New Zealand Mud Snails #/m2 – 1573435.56; column 74: New Zealand Mud Snails mg AFDM/m2 – 102828.33, 2 missing values; column 262 Acari mg AFDM/m2 – 2.65, 2 missing values. Flows to consumers.csv contains annual estimates of organic matter flow (i.e., consumption; g AFDM m-2 y-1) from basal resources to invertebrate consumers. These data represent annual mean (±bootstrapped 95% CI) flows based on combined gut content and secondary production data. Checksum values are: column 3: amorphous detritus – 279.570; column 12: amorphous detritus – 368.555; column 27: animal – 5.819.

Supplement 1. Inorganic nitrogen (NH4-N and NO3-N) uptake parameters and associated hydrologic data from 54 published studies used to evaluate relationships between uptake and discharge.

File List Tank_et_al_uptake_data.txt Description The Tank_et_al_uptake_data.txt file contains 514 lines of tab-delimited data from the literature that was used to assess relationship between inorganic nitrogen uptake parameters and stream discharge, and to compare NO3-N uptake parameters with NH4-N uptake parameters. Parameter abbreviations are as follows: Cb = background concentration in µg/L; Cp = plateau concentration in µg/L; Sw = uptake length in meters; Vf = uptake velocity in mm/min. Missing values are indicated by a period (‘.’). Full citations associated with author_date_code in column 1 are given in Tank et al. Appendix A.
