Need for structure: Categorizing ambiguous items as art or not art

View Dataset
Burke, Sara Emily;LaFrance, Marianne

Description

In four studies, I attempted to use an art categorization task to temporarily manipulate participants' need for structure, and possibly their attitudes toward bisexual people. The task involved categorizing ambiguous or unambiguous items as "art" or "not art."

Data were collected via Amazon Mechanical Turk in July and August 2013. Study 1 took place on 2013-07-08, Study 2 on 2013-07-24, Study 3 from 2013-08-01 to 2013-08-02, and Study 4 on 2013-08-12.
In all data files, a value of -99 indicates that the participant saw the item in question but did not respond to it.

I recognize that the documentation of this project could be more detailed. I have many projects that could benefit from additional public documentation. If you are using the data, please reach out to me via email and I can prioritize sharing more information about this one.
