Description
WAVES is the Wide Area Vista Extragalactic Survey, a new state-of-the-art galaxy redshift survey to be carried out on the new multi-million euro 4MOST facility on the European Southern Observatory's VISTA telescope in Chile. It will collect redshifts for over 2 million galaxies and will answer fundamental questions about galaxy evolution and dark matter. WAVES is led by researchers at ICRAR/UWA; the theory and simulations support for the survey is led by the institute's computational modelling and theory group. We have 1.5M CPU hrs allocated on magnus in 2016 (under pawsey0118) to carry out cosmological N-body simulations, using which we will build synthetic galaxy surveys. The largest of our our runs will generate 40TBs of raw data, with the combined dataset this year generating ~60-70 TBs. For this reason we require access to expanded storage for the raw data; this can be stored for 12-18 months, while we extract, test, publish the reduced data products required to create the synthetic galaxy surveys.
