1788 Massachusetts Cent

BostonArchaeology

Description

Recovered from an archaeological dig on Boston Common in the 1980's, this copper alloy coin was minted in 1788 by the State of Massachusetts in the years following independence. Many states minted their own currency in the transitional period after the Revolutionary War and before the establishment of the US Mint in 1792. The depiction of the Massachusett Native American on this coin would later become the official Seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.Scanned by Brian Schools.Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
