Description

15 photographs (copy negatives) of airplanes in the air, a view from an airplane, and airplanes being built in a factory, various locations, 1951 August 30. Negative no. 3 shows a Lockheed Super Constellation. Negative no. 6 (with the San Francisco Bay Bridge in the background) shows one -- and negative no. 12 shows both -- of the only 2 prototypes built of the Lockheed R6V Constitution, made for the US Navy and Pan American Airways. In one unnumbered negative there is a Western Airlines airplane boarding on the tarmac, with the tail of a Pan American Airlines plane closer to the camera. Negative no. 9 shows a Lockheed F-90 in air, tail no. "6687, US Air Force." Negative no. 13 shows the Burbank (old Union) Airport and Lockheed factory, with the United Airlines building at far right. Negative no. 5 shows T-33 (trainer) airplanes being made in a factory. "Copies Lockheed planes." "Client: Whittington; neg #6 has to be replaced by a new neg[ative]; Year: 1951; Job no. R8-30-9" -- on envelope fronts. "Negative retouching 1 h[our]" -- on envelope back. The negative envelope indicates that the Whittington studio fulfilled 3 orders for prints and sold reproduction rights once.
