93 photographs to accompany an "illustrated lecture" about "chain store employees, probably Los Angeles County, 1938 February 1. Images are mainly portraits and action photographs, with families, interiors and exteriors of houses, farms, factories, businesses, with men, women, and children, but include: the Van de Kamp Holland Dutch Bakers storefront, Gallen Kamp's all leather shoes store front, a man wearing a US World War 1 style military uniform, a man in a "Jonesville" baseball uniform, a J.C. Penny storefront, "farmers' union" and "farm bureau" signs, the Albert Sheetz storefront, a "Grange" sign, a sign "Eat Tomatoes, Drink Tomatoes -This is Western Grower's Tomato Week", a man sitting in a Jaguar, a man in a cowboy hat posing with a rifle, a sign "Nation-Wide Farmer Consumer Sale, This is beef week", a sign "Employment Office," and boxes with "Philco Radio Tube." The signs and products in image no. 9 include: "Spry," "Fluffo," "Kraft Grated," "Snowflake Soda," "Durkee Troco Oleomargarine," "Ginger Snaps," "Honey Maid Graham Cracker," "Cracker Meal," "Kellogg's All Bran," "Lucerne Brand Cottage Cheese," "Lucerne Milk," "Nob Hill Coffee," "Sleepy Hollow Syrup," "They make good candies, Fluff-i-est Marshmallow," and "Kitchencraft Flour." The signs and products in image 12 include: "Holland Dutch Windmill Bread," "Van de Kamp's prepared dressing for poultry and meats," "bread crumbs," "Van de Kamp's Ice Cream," "Van de Rocket," and "Van de Fan." The products in image 16 include: "Ray-O-Vac - Ignition Dry Battery," "Ray-O-Vac Flashlight," and "Fulton No.200 Universal Pedal Pads." The certificate in image no. 64 reads "International Union Market." The signs on negative 78 include: "Drink more tomato juice, 12 oz. jumbo glass" "Decidedly better at The Owl" "Heinz Tomato Juice." The signs on negative 89 include "Monteleone-Michel Company," "S. W. Lee Company," "M and L Produce Company," "Zenith Company," "Southern California Produce," "Sunrise Produce Company," "Goldstar Produce Company," "Valley Fruit Produce Company," and "Eastern Produce." "Client: California Chain Stores; Agency: Rodney Gilliam" -- on envelope front. "Operator's report -- Name: 'Dick' Whittington]; 108 photo slides as per contract; Amount: $132" -- on envelope back. The negative envelope indicates that the Whittington studio fulfilled 14 print orders and sold reproduction rights 3 times.
