Thermokarst lakes on the Tibetan Plateau from 1990 to 2022

Yang, Guoqing;Qiu, Haijun

Description

Recent climate warming has accelerated the permafrost thaw and dynamics of thermokarst lakes (TLs) on the Tibetan Plateau. Using the global surface water product, we compiled an inventory of TLs with areas ranging from 1-300 ha, and categorized them as unchanging, expanding, emerging, shrinking and vanishing. Based on time-series remote sensing imagery, we identified the primary occurrence year of lake changes from 1990 to 2022. Also, this dataset includes information on the topographic and permafrost characteristics of TLs.
