Description
This dataset comprises comprehensive ecological data collected during a year-long study focused on the insect biodiversity of Andipalayam Lake, a significant freshwater body in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, India. The primary objective of the study was to document the diverse insect populations and analyze their ecological roles in maintaining the lake's health, as well as to assess the impact of various environmental factors on these communities.Data Collection Methods: Insect species were collected across various seasons over a one-year period using a combination of sweep nets, pitfall traps, and light traps to capture population dynamics and seasonal variations. Simultaneously, key water quality parameters including temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen were rigorously monitored to understand their influence on insect diversity.Dataset Contents:The dataset includes:Insect Abundance Data: Counts of individuals for various insect orders (e.g., Diptera, Odonata, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Ephemeroptera, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Trichoptera) from multiple sampling events.Environmental Data: Corresponding measurements of water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen for each sampling event.Sampling Metadata: Information on sampling dates, specific locations around the lake, and the collection methods employed for each sample.Significance:This dataset provides valuable baseline information on freshwater insect communities in a regionally important lacustrine ecosystem. It supports research into aquatic ecology, biodiversity conservation, and the use of insects as bioindicators of environmental health, particularly in areas affected by agricultural runoff and urban development. The data can be utilized by researchers studying freshwater ecosystems, entomology, and environmental impact assessments.
