Parkes observations for project P814 semester 2016OCTS
View DatasetDescription
During the past 6 years, we at Parkes and collaborators at otherradio telescopes have been remarkably successful at discoveringmillisecond pulsars (MSPs) associated with unidentified Fermi-LATgamma-ray sources. Based on lessons learned, we here propose toextend our P814 project, which so far has yielded 13 new MSPs inrepeated 1-hour searches at 1.4 GHz of unidentified LAT sourceswith spectral characteristics that are consistent with those ofknown pulsars. The coming 4FGL gamma-ray source catalog containshundreds of unidentified sources with better source-class discriminationthan previous catalogs. We have selected the "top 40" of thesesources suitable for Parkes searches. Because of interstellarscintillation, large orbital acceleration, and eclipses, it isimportant to search the most highly ranked sources multiple times. Here we propose to observe 40 high Galactic latitude unidentifiedFermi sources three times each. The overall time request is 120hours on source, or 132 hours including overheads.
