State-level cultural racism factor and indicator values
Description
Data set is composed of nine indicators of cultural racism that were collated together from publicly available data sources, and a latent measure of cultural racism derived from applying confirmatory factor analysis on these nine indicators. Manuscript describing details of developing and validating the cultural racism factor has been provisionally accepted with the title: A Latent Measure of Cultural Racism and Its Association with US Mortality and Life Expectancy. All of these data were sourced from publicly available data. Specifically, data on Public symbols of the Confederacy was obtained from the Southern Poverty Law Center, publicly available at https://www.splcenter.org/resources/reports/whose-heritage-public-symbols-confederacy-3/. Hate group data was obtained from the Southern Poverty Law Center, publicly available at https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map/. Hate crime rate data was obtained from FBI Hate Crime Statistics, 2017, publicly available at https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/hate-crime. Online racial animus data was obtained from Google trends, publicly available at https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2017-01-01%202017-12-31&geo=US&hl=en-US. Lack of community-oriented policing implementation data was obtained from the Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics database, publicly available at https://bjs.ojp.gov/data-collection/law-enforcement-management-and-administrative-statistics-lemas#documentation-0. Implicit bias of White resident data was obtained from Project Implicit, publicly available at https://osf.io/gwofk/files/osfstorage. Also, data was extracted from peer-reviewed journal articles for racial resentment (Smith et al. 2020; https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/dynamics-of-racial-resentment-across-the-50-us-states/1B1AB5DED49BFEE80A9C4BE7E4FBF5C2), anti-immigrant sentiments (Butz and Kehrberg, 2016; https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2053168016645830), and lack of White support for Medicaid expansion (Grogan and Park, 2017; https://read.dukeupress.edu/jhppl/article/42/3/539/13927/The-Racial-Divide-in-State-Medicaid-Expansions).
