Photograph of a Hopi Indian mother carrying her baby on her back outside an adobe dwelling, ca.1900. Her dark hair is worn in tight braids at the sides of her head. She wears a plaid blanket with a fringe about her shoulders over her knee-length dress. The baby is slung in the blanket on her back. At the woman's feet sit a bag or mattress and an open wooden box. A rope hangs from the rough wall behind her.
