Men having a rest, Nyasa, Tanzania, ca.1937

Küchler, Kurt, 1908-?

Description

"Rasthaus auf der Missionsreise. Der uralte dicke Baum erinnert die Eingeborenen noch an die früheren Stammeskriege, weil dort die Köpfe der Gefangenen aufgehängt wurden." ("Resthouse on the mission journey. The very old, large tree reminds the Africans of the former tribal wars, because the captives' heads were hung up there.") Two missionaries, presumably Küchler and Tietzen, and a group of Africans are standing or sitting under a large tree. Next to the tree: a thatched hut.; Theodor Tietzen (1893-1973) was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. Having married Hildegard Marie Lenz in 1921 and served in South Africa (West) from 1922 to 1927, he moved to East Africa, where he served in Mbozi till 1929 and in Utengule till 1939. In the 1950s he returned to South Africa. -- Kurt Küchler (1908-?) was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. He served in Kyimbila from 1936 to 1939. In 1938 he married Marianne Geisler.
