Description

Annotation translation: "Every child is brought to a traditional priest [literally: a spirit-priest] 8 days after the birth. People ask him what the child will be. The spirit gives his prophecy: storekeeper, farmer, etc. Or he [the pronoun is ambiguous: 'he' could be the priest, or the spirit] decides the child should become the priest of a spirit. If this is the case the child's hair will not be cut. And on days when offerings are made to the spirit, the child makes offerings too."; Annotation: "Jedes Kind wird 8 Tage nach der Geburt einem Geisterpriester gebracht, der angefragt wird, was aus dem Kinde werden soll. (MS 11.1998).; Note translation: The white frame around the child has been painted on (MS 11/98).; Stamped: "Museum der Basler Mission, Basel, Missionsstrasse 21."
