Description

“My work was chiefly walking 12-20 miles per day & looking after 800 odd porters’ medical needs. Here is a sick parade.” Exterior view at a military depot showing a line of carriers waiting to see Capt. Irvine who sits at a folding table. Capt. Irvine was attached to a column of the 4/4 KAR and Nigerian Brigade as a medical officer, particularly treating the men of the Carrier Corps. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
