Description
This poll, conducted on October 8, 2001, is part of acontinuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion onthe presidency and on a range of other political and socialissues. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of PresidentGeorge W. Bush and his handling of the presidency, the nationaleconomy, and the attacks of September 11th on the World Trade Centerand the Pentagon, as well as their views and feelings on the militaryattacks by the United States against targets in Afghanistan.Respondents also expressed their confidence in the ability of theUnited States government to capture Osama Bin Laden, to maintain theinternational alliance of the countries supporting United Statesmilitary efforts, to achieve its military goals without significantcivilian casualties among the Afghan people and without significantUnited States military casualties, and to protect its citizens fromfuture terrorist attacks. Those queried also presented their views onthe likelihood of another terrorist attack in the United States withinthe next few months, the expected length of time a war againstcountries that harbor terrorists would last, and any feelings theymight have toward Arab people due to the attacks. Additional questionspolled respondents on whether the United States was in an economicrecession or was near an economic recession, whether there were anyunemployed adults in their household, and their concerns about futureunemployment in the household. Background information on respondentsincludes age, gender, race, political affiliation, religion, currentand past military service, and marital status.
