The National Household Education Survey (NHES) reports onthe condition of education in the United States by collecting data atthe household level rather than using a traditional, school-based datacollection system. The surveys attempt to address many current issuesin education, such as preprimary education, school safety anddiscipline, adult education, and activities related tocitizenship. This survey included three topical survey components: aParent Interview, a Youth Interview, and an Adult EducationInterview. The Parent Interview (Part 1, Parent Survey Data) collecteddata on a variety of topics, including early childhood programparticipation, types and frequency of family involvement in children'sschooling, school practices to involve and support families, learningactivities with children outside of school, and plans for theirchildren's postsecondary education. The Adult Education Interview(Part 2, Adult Education Survey Data) gathered data on type of adulteducation program enrolled in, employer support, and degree sought forsix types of adult educational activities, including English as asecond language, adult basic education, credential programs,apprenticeships, work-related courses, and personal developmentcourses. The Youth Interview (Part 3, Youth Survey Data) elicitedinformation from youths in the 6th through 12th grades whose parentshad completed a Parent Interview. Respondents were asked about schooland family environments, civic involvement and community service, andplans for postsecondary education.
