A national stand-level dataset of aboveground biomass components for Canada's forested ecosystems
Description
This dataset provides stand-level estimates of aboveground biomass (AGB) components for Canada’s forested ecosystems, derived from the Satellite-Based Forest Inventory (SBFI). It extends existing SBFI total treed AGB by allocating biomass to dominant tree species and partitioning it into stemwood, bark, branch, and foliage components. In addition, the dataset includes estimates of AGB for non-treed vegetation pools. The product is based on multi-decadal Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellite data integrated within the National Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring System (NTEMS), and is spatially exhaustive and nationally consistent across approximately 650 million hectares of forested land. Estimates are provided at the stand (polygon) level, covering more than 25 million forest stands. This dataset supports applications requiring detailed biomass accounting beyond total AGB, including carbon reporting, forest productivity analysis, habitat assessment, and wildfire fuel characterization. This dataset is described in: Hermosilla, T., Tompalski, P., Manvailer, V., Bronson, S.C., White, J.C., Baral, S.K., Boisvenue, C., Bater, C.W., Hobart, G., Wulder, M.A. (2026).
