Description

Ionic liquid ion sources (ILIS) are compact ion beam sources with applications in nanofabrication and spacecraft propulsion. Their operation is characterized by a sharp onset voltage and a hysteresis upon voltage reduction. Despite two decades of theoretical work, the physical mechanism underlying this discontinuous onset has remained without an explicit mathematical formulation.
