Low-Reynolds Wind Tunnel Dataset of Generalized Biological Morphotypes for CFD Validation
View DatasetDescription
This dataset provides wind tunnel measurements for a set of nine generalized biological morphotypes designed to represent broad organismal body plans relevant to paleobiological and functional-morphological studies. The models were digitally designed, 3D printed, and tested under low-Reynolds-number flow conditions in a controlled wind tunnel setting. For each morphotype, the dataset includes aerodynamic measurements across multiple flow velocities, including drag force, associated measurement error, Reynolds number, projected frontal area, characteristic length, and drag coefficient. The dataset is intended as an experimental benchmark for validating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of simplified biological and paleobiological forms. By combining controlled physical testing with generalized morphotypes, it provides a reusable reference for assessing whether CFD models accurately reproduce aerodynamic forces and dimensionless performance metrics across different body shapes and flow regimes.
