The cooperative in question is from a rice value chain in the Western province of Zambia. Specifically, the objectives of this study are to: 1. Describe differences between active and passive members based on their marketing channels and perceived non-economic benefits. 2. Analyze the influence of members perceived social attributes of the cooperative on the intensity of their commitment. 3. Determine the impact of the intensity of commitment to the cooperative on the members’ economic performance. This study, therefore, seeks to test the following hypotheses: - H1: Social attributes, such as acceptance, voice, trust, reciprocity, market connections and leadership competence are related to commitment to the cooperative. - H2: Achieved positive economic benefits are related to a higher level of member commitment to the cooperative.
